Designing Recycling Bins to Prevent Source Contamination

Implementing a recycling program is thankfully becoming the norm for businesses these days. Recycling saves money, helps preserve valuable resources and can help promote a cleaner image.

However, maintaining an effective recycling program is not an easy task. Program managers face the major challenge of preventing waste contamination at the source. This is especially difficult in public places such as malls, parks or sidewalks where waste types are often mixed extensively. The recovered quality of the waste in these areas is particularly dependent upon a pro-active and green-educated recycler.

The following are some guidelines that can assist program managers in implementing a recycling program that helps recyclers sort material before they discard it.

Coffee Smelling, Eco-friendly PELA iPhone Case

In the world of eco-friendly products is the new startup called Open Mind Developments. Created in the prairie province of Saskatchewan, this startup’s products use a proprietary flax fibre strengthened biopolymer. Their plant-based petroleum-free products are an excellent alternative to plastic, do not contain bio-accumulative toxic chemicals and are biodegradable.

With ties to the University of Saskatchewan, Open Mind Developments has been to date working with the industrial sector to provide plastic-free injection moldings for their machinery. Their latest venture into the commercial market is the PELA Case for the iPhone 4.

According to the PELA Case website (http://pelacase.com), by 2011 more than 970 tonnes of conventional plastic iPhone cases will be sold in North America.  Considering that most of these  cases are made oversees in Asia, not only do we pay locally for their 200-300 years of decomposition in our landfills but we also pay globally for the carbon emissions associated with hauling these products across the Pacific.

How to be a Green Runner – an Eco-Friendly Guide to Running Shoes

As a runner, shoes are the only workout gear you really need. Of course, there are other things that you might want like Lululemon pants, Amphipod water belt, Nike GPS, iPod etc.

When it comes to choosing running shoes – the choice will mainly depend upon the shape of your foot. Water test is one of the most common ways to figure out whether you have flat, normal or high arch. As a rule of thumb, motion-control shoes are recommended for flat arches, neutral cushioning shoes for high arches and stability shoes for normal arches. If you have to use orthotics like me, then neutral cushioning shoes is way to go.

The next level of choice for me is based on eco-friendliness of the shoes. An average running shoe needs to be replaced after 800 km. Read More »

Naturally Flavoured Water – Tasty, Healthy, Sustainable and Frugal

Summer is here, and I am thinking about creating new drinks – inexpensive, green and without excessive sugar or calories.  You see, I don’t like the taste of plain water.  Human bodies are 70% water and the minimum fluid requirement for an average person is about 8 cups (2 litres) a day. If you are on a diet that is high in fibre or protein, you will require more water than average. Also, men tend to require more fluids than their Venus counterparts.  So how much should you drink?

Your individual dose could be anywhere from 6 to 13 cups. Start with 6 cups a day and keep increasing till your urine is clear. This is when your kidneys are at their optimal flushing functionality.

Nuclear Fuel Bank – Is the Agenda Safety or Political Control?

Nuclear has a bad rep – when we think of nuclear, we think of Three Mile Island, Hiroshima, or Chernobyl. Public outrage was so great that we just said “No Nukes” and left it at that. But now with imminent peaking traditional energy sources and no breakthrough in replacement renewable energy sources, nuclear is back on the menu. Warren Buffet, the oracle of Omaha, added nuclear reactors to his portfolio back in 2008 to control nearly four per cent of US electricity supply. Bill Gates’ new business venture is also nuclear – where electricity is generated via reactors that run on natural or depleted uranium.

But the nuclear has two sides – enriched uranium can be used to light up streets and run industries, and it can also be used to flatten entire cities. Nearly 60 countries looking at nuclear as a source of electricity and some of these have military ambitions. About 30 countries already use nuclear for electricity. In France, for example almost 80% of the electricity generation is nuclear in origin.
